কূর্মপুরাণ হল সর্বাপেক্ষা কৌতুহলোদ্দীপক সম্প্রদায়-কেন্দ্রিক পুরাণ। কারণ, বিষ্ণুর একটি অবতারের নামাঙ্কিত হলেও প্রকৃতপক্ষে এই পুরাণটি বিষ্ণু ও শিব-কেন্দ্রিক কিংবদন্তি, পৌরাণিক কাহিনি, তীর্থমাহাত্ম্য ও ধর্মতত্ত্বের সংকলন। এই পুরাণে প্রাপ্ত উপাখ্যানগুলি অন্যান্য পুরাণ থেকে পাওয়া উপাখ্যানগুলিরই অনুরূপ।
