About this App
Italy is a country situated on a peninsula defined by the Alps and surrounded by various islands. Its territory largely coincides with the geographic region of the same name. Located at the heart of the Mediterranean in Southern Europe, Italy is also considered part of Western Europe. As a unitary parliamentary republic, with Rome as its capital and largest city, Italy spans a total area of 301,340 km² (116,350 sq mi). It shares land borders with France, Switzerland, Austria, Slovenia, and the enclaved microstates of Vatican City and San Marino. Italy also has a territorial exclave in Switzerland (Campione) and a maritime exclave in Tunisian waters (Lampedusa). With a population of approximately 60 million, Italy is the third-most populous member of the European Union.
Due to its central position in Southern Europe and the Mediterranean, Italy has long been a crossroads of various peoples and cultures. In addition to ancient groups inhabiting what is now modern Italy, the most influential were the Indo-European Italic peoples, who gave the peninsula its name. Beginning in the classical era, Phoenicians and Carthaginians established colonies, especially on Italy’s islands; Greeks founded settlements in what became known as Magna Graecia in the south; while Etruscans and Celts dominated central and northern Italy, respectively. An Italic tribe called the Latins founded the Roman Kingdom in the 8th century BC, which later became a republic governed by the Senate and the People. The Roman Republic conquered and assimilated neighboring territories, eventually expanding across Europe, North Africa, and Asia. By the 1st century BC, the Roman Empire emerged as the dominant power around the Mediterranean, becoming a center of culture, politics, and religion, and ushering in the Pax Romana, a period of over 200 years during which Italian society flourished in law, technology, economy, art, and literature.
In the Early Middle Ages, Italy faced the fall of the Western Roman Empire and waves of barbarian invasions. However, by the 11th century, several city-states and maritime republics, especially in the north and center, grew prosperous through trade, banking, and commerce, helping lay the foundations of modern capitalism. These independent states acted as major trade hubs between Europe and the Near East, often enjoying more democratic governance compared to the emerging feudal monarchies elsewhere in Europe. Central Italy, meanwhile, was controlled by the Papal States, while Southern Italy remained largely feudal until the 19th century due to a series of foreign rulers, including the Byzantines, Arabs, Normans, Angevins, and Aragonese. The Renaissance began in Italy, sparking a revival in humanism, science, exploration, and art, producing many of history’s most renowned scholars and artists. During the Middle Ages, Italian explorers also played a key role in opening new trade routes to the Far East and the Americas, contributing to the European Age of Discovery. However, Italy’s political and commercial influence waned with the rise of new global trade routes that bypassed the Mediterranean.
