The fox, any member of the Canidae family that resembles small to medium-sized dogs with a thick tail with long fur, pointed ears, and a narrow snout. In a restricted sense, the name refers to the ten or so species classified as "true" foxes (genus foxes), especially the red fox, or the common fox (V. vulpes), which live in both the Old and New Worlds. Many other foxes belong to genera other than foxes, including the North American gray fox, the five species of South American fox, the arctic fox (including the blue fox), the bat-eared fox, and the crab-eating fox.
